June 10, 2014 -- It has only been four days since same-sex marriage was legalized in Wisconsin, but there are already heartwarming stories coming from the state.

One couple, Christopher Graham and Andrew Capelle, married Friday, the first day they could, and headed to restaurant Transfer Pizzeria & Café in Milwaukee afterward for a celebratory dinner.

“We just wanted to go to a place that was really comfortable to us and we knew we could still just be happy and accepted,” Graham said.

The couple split an appetizer, two pizzas and a dessert before asking their server for the check.

“She walked over and handed us the check, and I just handed her the debit card and didn’t even look at it,” Graham said. “She’s like, ‘Oh, no, here’s the check. I just wanted to let you know that we here at the restaurant are really happy you guys wanted to stop in here, so the staff took care of your dinner tonight.'”

Graham, 30, and Capelle, 29, were shocked at the restaurant’s generosity and took to Facebook to thank them.

“I just wanted to take a moment and thank you personally and publicly for the very kind gesture. It was an amazing day that we will never forget, especially how your restaurant and staff made it even more wonderful. Thank you!!” Graham wrote on Transfer’s Facebook page.

Transfer owner Krys Zielinski said it was a spur-of-the-moment decision.

“Our sever Melissa was very touched by the story, and I think it’s a big deal in Wisconsin,” he said. “We weren’t looking to make a stand, but it was definitely something we felt was the right thing to do at that moment.”

Since then, the pizzeria has gotten mostly support on Facebook, Twitter and through email, but Zielinski said there have been a few detractors, as well.

“We had some comments that were not so nice,” he said. “Obviously, people are divided on that issue, but we feel personally like we’ve done the right thing, and I think that’s the most important thing.”
