Top 10 Eco-Friendly Hotels in the United States

Not only are hotels around the nation "going green," but so are the travelers staying in the rooms, according to the recently released list of the top 10 Eco-friendly hotels in the United States from TripAdvisor.

The Gardens Hotel in Key West, Florida came in as the number one Eco-friendly hotel. But California made the biggest impact on the list of Eco-friendly hotels, TripAdvisor spokesperson Julie Cassetina told ABC News.

"While there are highly-rated green hotels throughout the country, California appears to be the front runner in the U.S.," she said. "It’s home to four of the top 10 accommodations on TripAdvisor’s list of green properties this year."

In addition to the Top 10 list, TripAdvisor also conducted an Eco-travel survey that received more than 1,400 responses from their users.

Here are TripAdvisor's findings from their survey:

• 66% of U.S. respondents are interested in eco-friendly travel

• 50% of U.S. respondents have made eco-friendly travel choices in the past 12 months and 61% plan to make eco-friendly travel choices in the next year.

• 74% agree that a property’s eco-friendly practices are “important” when booking their stay.

• When it comes to planning and booking a trip, 45% of U.S. respondents “often” look for information about a hotel’s eco-friendly practices, while 11% “always” do.

• 55% of U.S. respondents think a towel/line re-use program is the most important practice for a hotel to be eco-friendly.

The most common ways U.S. respondents have "traveled green" in the past 12 months include turning off lights and air conditioning when leaving the hotel room, participating in the hotel’s linen/towel re-use program and buying locally-sourced products, according to TripAdvisor.

"Travelers are becoming more aware of environmentally friendly practices when it comes to booking a trip," Cassetina said.
