August 9, 2007— -- The Brookings Institution and the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) have invited leading presidential candidates to participate in two public forum events on the UNR campus.

The first forum, scheduled for August 20, will feature leading Republican candidates. The second forum, on August 22, will feature leading Democratic candidates.

Each forum will start with an expert, non-partisan panel discussion followed by remarks from participating presidential candidates. Candidates will be allotted equal time to address issues important to Nevada.

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is the first of the invited candidates to confirm he will participate in the Democratic forum on August 22.

The forums are part of Opportunity 08, a project of the Brookings Institution in partnership with ABC News to help broaden the discussion of America's policy challenges.

Experts from both Republican and Democratic administrations have contributed essays and proposals to Opportunity 08. The project is guided by a bipartisan advisory council and its chairs, Tom Donilon and Ken Duberstein.
