— -- USA TODAY's interactive poll tracker shows how the race for the White House is evolving as the nation nears the general election.

The graphic shows poll results and a smoothed trend line for each candidate. An equation draws the line so that it reflects the average at any given time of the most recent polls for each candidate.

The Iowa caucuses (Jan. 3) and New Hampshire primary (Jan. 8) kicked off the voting season that culminates on November 4 with the nationwide vote for the country's 44th president.
