Bob Costas Sidelined by Eye Infection
Matt Lauer replacing Bob Costas for tonight's coverage.
Feb. 11, 2014— -- A double-dose of pinkeye is keeping Bob Costas on the sidelines.
Matt Lauer will replace the sportscaster in tonight's primetime Olympics coverage after his eye infection spread, NBC announced.
Costas's eye infection has been a lingering talking point throughout the Sochi Olympics, ever since he took the air Thursday wearing glasses, his left eye reddened and watery.
After the infection spread, he turned to vodka -- downing booze alongside fellow on-air personality Mary Carillo on last night's episode of "Olympic Late Night."
Costas joked about his pinkeye before drinking the liquor.
"My eyes can't get any redder, no matter what I do," he said.
"I'll drink to that," Carillo responded, laughing.
"Down the hatch," he said, finishing his drink. "Tomorrow morning I'll be lying on a curb in Minsk."
Instead, Costas is resting, hoping his pinkeye improves.
