FIFA World Cup 2014: Costa Rica Upsets Uruguay

June 14, 2014— -- Costa Rica provided another major upset at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, beating Uruguay 3-1.

There was only one goal in the first half, from Uruguay through a penalty kick. But Costa Rica, an underdog according the country's World Cup record, revved up for an unexpected victory with three goals after the break.

Striker Joel Campbell scored after Celso Borges headed down the ball in the 54th minute, and Oscar Duarte headed in the winner. Substitute Marcos Urena added the third goal with six minutes left, as Costa Rica won for the first time in the World Cup since 2002, when it beat China in the group stage.

2014 FIFA World Cup TV Schedule and Results

Uruguay has had 11 World Cup appearances, with two titles, as World Cup champions in Uruguay in 1930 and Brazil's 1950 games. Uruguay's FIFA ranking was seventh, as of June 5.

Meanwhile, Costa Rica previously made three appearances at the World Cup with no titles to its name. Its FIFA ranking was 28th.

Costa Rica's national team first entered the football tournament in 1990, and competed again in 2002 and 2006.
