Torrential rain battered the northeastern Brazilian coastal city in the hours leading up to the pivotal match that will decide which team advances to the next round of the World Cup.

Roads looked more like rivers as drivers carefully navigated through the streets to the stadium, while some pedestrians braved the knee-deep waters in rain boots.

The grass field inside the stadium appeared wet but kickoff was not delayed.
