Ticket holders for the United States-Germany showdown in Recife today may have to swim to the stadium at this rate.
Torrential rain battered the northeastern Brazilian coastal city in the hours leading up to the pivotal match that will decide which team advances to the next round of the World Cup.
Roads looked more like rivers as drivers carefully navigated through the streets to the stadium, while some pedestrians braved the knee-deep waters in rain boots.
The grass field inside the stadium appeared wet but kickoff was not delayed.
Still raining hard. Field sloppy. But it'll have to be dreadful for game to be postponed. pic.twitter.com/n5eXmMadQj— Jeremy Schaap (@JeremySchaap) June 26, 2014
