— -- AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A day that began with so much promise for Tiger Woods ended with more pain Sunday, this time a wrist injury that occurred when he caught a tree root with an iron shot on the ninth hole at the Masters.

The extent of the problem with Woods' right wrist was unclear as he played the back nine at Augusta National, where he started the final round 10 strokes behind Jordan Spieth but was unable to make a move. He did make an eagle at the 13th hole, where he hit his first fairway of the day.

After the round, Woods told CBS that a bone had popped out in his wrist and that he put it back in.

He shot a 1-over 73 on Sunday to finish at 5 under in 17th place.

Woods was in obvious distress after he attempted his second shot at the ninth from the right side of the fairway, his ball sitting on pine straw. It appeared that a piece of a root flew up after Woods struck the ball, and the golfer yelled immediately and bent over to hold his wrist.

He continued to shake it and walk awkwardly as he got up to the green, where he made par. But he hit a poor tee shot at the 10th as he favored the wrist, leading to a bogey.

Woods began the final round in a tie for sixth and had surpassed expectations for the week, which started with many wondering if he could make the cut after a two-month absence that included working on issues in his game.

But Woods shot consecutive rounds in the 60s on Friday and Saturday and spoke about being proud to get back into this position.

Woods had not completed all four rounds in an official event on American soil since he tied for 25th at the WGC Cadillac Championship in March 2014. That was the last event he played before undergoing back surgery.

Since returning in July, Woods had played just seven worldwide events coming into the Masters, withdrawing from two and missing the cut in three. He had played just 47 holes this year and shot his career-worst score of 82 in missing the cut at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
