Galaxy's 'Boxy Bulge' of Stars Baffles Scientists

It's not just people who pack on extra weight around the middle. "Boxy bulges" also form at the centers of spiral galaxies, astronomers say. They're not yet sure why. This Hubble Space Telescope image shows NGC 4710, an example of one of those bulges. It was discovered by William Herschel in the 1780s. He noted it simply as a "faint nebula."
