— -- Goodbye, Internet Explorer. Hello, Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft announced today that Microsoft Edge is the official moniker of the new browser that had been code named Project Spartan.

While the new browser was first announced in January, Microsoft revealed its name and the meaning behind it today at the company's annual Build developer's conference.

"We chose the name Microsoft Edge as it reflects our commitment to developers to deliver a browser that lives at the edge of modern Web standards and security," the company said on its website.

Among the features in Microsoft Edge are built-in note taking, easy sharing, the ability to work in several panes without switching around and integration with Microsoft's virtual assistant, Cortana.

The new browser will be available in Windows 10 sometime this summer. Microsoft has not yet released the exact date the new software will ship.
