— -- St. Helena Island welcomed its first commercial airliner Monday.

The British Airways Boeing 737 touched down on the runway shortly after noon. According to reports, it was a trial flight from Johannesburg. Regular service is scheduled to begin from the South African city next month.

The remote British island just completed construction on its first airport earlier this year. According to its tourism bureau, the only means of commercial access to St. Helena was by Royal Mail Ship from Johannesburg prior to the airport’s completion.
