Jennifer Lawrence Has an Important Message; DC Raises Minimum Wage to $11.50

It's not always enough to know what's "trending." It kind of helps to know why. Welcome to the Social Climber, where we provide a quick primer on the people, places and things that are being feverishly searched and shared online -- and try to make sense of it all.
Jennifer Lawrence Has an Important Message
"Hunger Games" star and everyone's imaginary best friend Jennifer Lawrence said "it should be illegal" to call someone fat and, in an interview with Barbara Walters, railed against people who bash the way women look.
"Because why is humiliating people funny?" the 23-year-old Oscar winner told Walters in an interview for the upcoming ABC News special, "Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013."
"I just think it should be illegal to call somebody fat on TV."
"I mean, if we're regulating cigarettes and sex and cuss words, because of the effect they have on our younger generation, why aren't we regulating things like calling people fat?" she said.
You go, J. Law.

Washington City Council Raises Minimum Wage to $11.50
It may be time to move to Washington, D.C., for a reason slightly more sensible than Social Climber's desire to feel even more invested in "Scandal."
On Tuesday, the D.C. City Council gave its approval to raise the city's minimum wage to $11.50 an hour by 2016, a more than $3 increase from the current $8.25 minimum wage, according to the Associated Press.
The bill will now head to the mayor's desk for his signature. Democratic Mayor Vincent Gray wanted a more modest increase, but isn't expected to veto the bill, the AP reported.
Kelly Rowland Reveals Boyfriend Proposed on Skype

Destiny's Child star Kelly Rowland is engaged to boyfriend Tim Witherspoon.
"He put a ring on it," Rowland, 32, said on "The Queen Latifah Show," referencing her band-mate's famous song "Single Ladies," which they performed together at the Super Bowl earlier this year.
The Grammy-winning singer is usually quiet about her love life and says she and Witherspoon have long been an item. "It's been a while," Rowland confessed to Latifah on the show airing today. "We've kept it very, very low, for years, to be completely honest."
The singer said her boyfriend and manager popped the question in an unexpected way. She was in Bulgaria when asked, Rowland said.
"He asked me first on Skype," she recalled, laughing, "and I was like, 'We're so far away from each other.'"
"He asked me, and it was just that simple to say yes. I was like, 'I got my best friend to ride through life with,'" she said. "He really is my best friend."
