March 29, 2006 — -- For years, the College Board, which administers the SAT, has provided special accommodations for students taking the exam who have learning disabilities. One of those accommodations is extra time -- up to twice as long.

Now, some academics, state governments and guidance counselors say that students without learning disabilities -- many of whom are from wealthy zip codes -- are "gaming the system" by getting a friendly psychologist to provide a diagnosis so he or she can get the extra time. The College Board says its vetting system prevents such attempts from being successful.
