1. Arthur Takes Aim at Carolinas After Reaching Hurricane Strength

Arthur is officially a hurricane, the first named storm of the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season, with some coastal residents forced to evacuate and the first rain bands reaching South Carolina.

The storm system, experiencing sustained winds of 75 mph, was centered about 340 miles southwest of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, at 5 a.m., and is moving north at about 9 mph, according to the National Weather Service’s National Hurricane Center.

2. US Teen Allegedly Falls in Love Online, Tries to Join ISIS Fighters in Syria

A suburban Denver teen fell in love with an ISIS fighter online, vowed to aid his cause in Syria, then was arrested at an airport, federal authorities said.

Shannon Maureen Conley, 19, of Arvada, Colorado, was charged with conspiracy to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization after FBI agents arrested her at Denver International Airport April 8 as she tried to board a flight to Frankfurt, Germany, according to a U.S. criminal complaint and a supporting affidavit. She allegedly had connecting flights to Istanbul, Turkey, and then to Adana, Turkey, just a few hours' drive from the Syrian border.

3. Hearing for Dad in Georgia Hot SUV Child Death

A suburban Atlanta man charged with murder in his 22-month-old son's death in a hot SUV is due in court to discuss his bond.

Justin Ross Harris is scheduled Thursday in Cobb County Magistrate Court. He faces murder and child cruelty charges in the June 18 death of his son, Cooper.

4. Vet Finally Gets VA Appointment, Two Years After His Death

The Department of Veteran Affairs is apologizing for finally responding to a hospital appointment request letter, two years too late.

Suzanne Chase of Acton, Massachusetts, has been working to ease the pain of losing her husband, Douglas Chase, to brain cancer for almost two years ago.

In 2012, a year after her husband’s diagnosis, Chase attempted to move his care in Boston to a nearby veteran’s hospital in Bedford. She said they waited for four months with no reply but Doug died in August 2012.

5. Woman Bares Colostomy Bag in Bikini Pic, Becomes Internet Sensation

Bethany Townsend decided to post some snapshots of herself in a bikini, bravely exposing her colostomy bags for the first time. And now they’ve gone viral.

The photos of the 23-year-old English makeup artist, who suffers from Crohn’s disease, have been viewed by more than 9 million people, according to Caters News.
