GROTON, Conn. July 24, 2012— -- State police say the University of Connecticut's Avery Point Campus is "under control" after an evacuation triggered by a report of an armed man on campus.

State police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance would not comment further on the situation. At 4:15 a.m. Tuesday he confirmed he was headed to the campus in Groton.

WFSB-TV reports that the standoff has ended, but says there's no word on the gunman's condition.

An emergency alert was posted on the school's website at about 11:35 p.m. Monday ordering an evacuation. A UCONN spokeswoman said a despondent man who'd threatened to harm himself had crawled beneath a dock and police negotiators were talking with him. The school overlooks Long Island Sound.

It was not known if the man had any connection to the university.
