We begin with the fast-moving story overseas. Six americans dead, including troops and a young woman who worked for the state department. All of them killed in two attacks in afghanistan, three of them american troops and the other three civilians. There is early word tonight one of the attacks happened as americans were helping to deliver books to afghan children. Abc's nick schifrin has reported extensively from the region where the attacks unfolded. He leads us off tonight. Reporter:11 years into the war, the taliban can still strike with deadly accuracy. A convoy of american troops and diplomats were driving down this road in southern afghanistan this morning after pulling out of their base. They joined the local governor's convoy and were going to deliver books to schoolchildren. Two suicide attackers sped for the u.S. Truck and exploded killing three u.S. Troops, one pentagon civilian and one female diplomat. One of very few killed in afghanistan during the entire war. Secretary of state john kerry had just met her in kabul and called her everything a foreign service officer should be, smart, capable, eager to serve, deeply committed. That diplomat was helping rebuild this area. Part of the same team I met when troops first arrived here. We feel the biggest way we can help this country is by helping the youth. Reporter: I saw them helping to a school, like the one they hoped to visit today but this city is desperately poor, that helps fuel attacks like today's and earlier this week, when 130 afghan civilians were killed or wounded when insurgents stormed a courthouse. Just as the u.S.' Highest ranking off rank ing officer landed in kabul. Military pulling soldiers back and makes diplomats on the front lines more important and more vulnerable.
