Transcript for Florida Cop Fired for Using Travyon Martin Shooting Targets
evening, a stunning image. It is a shooting target, a figure of a man wearing a hoodie and carrying skittles. That for many, brings trayvon martin to mind. That resemblance causing outrage. And the man who brought it to the firing range, a police officer, has now been fired. Abc's matt gutman on how that officer is explaining it. And what he's saying to trayvon martin's family. Reporter: A cape canaveral port authority police officer has been fired for bringing these shooting targets to a weapons exercise in central florida. He had a target in the back of his car. And offered it to two other officers with the force. Reporter: According to the mortified ceo of the port authority, john walsh, those fellow cops, disgusted with the choice of targets, reported sergeant ron king. King admits to having the trayvon martin targets, with the faceless figure and the hoodie. Even skittles and iced tea. And offered this apology. I would like to start my statement by apologizing to the family of trayvon martin for being used as a pawn in somebody's political agenda. Reporter: In the six-minute address, king claims he was going to use the targets, as an example of what not to shoot at. And the target is something i viewed as an example of a no-shoot situation. Reporter: The video seemed reminiscent to this video. This is george zimmerman. Reporter: Shot by george zimmerman in the months after he shot martin. This re-enactment, he claims self-defense. Saying martin was bashing his head into the pavement when he fired. Whatever their intent, this latest use of the targets originally sold last may has re-ignited tensions less than two months before zimmerman's second-degree murder trial is set to begin. Matt gutman, abc news, miami.
