wildfire in the west. Forcing hundreds of families out of their homes tonight. Look at the images. The fire began as a line of flames across the hills there now covering more than 1,000 acres. A small part of it contained. Firefighters hard at work. Clayton Sandell in Bakersfield, California. Reporter: The wall of fire moving quickly coming up over this hill. Nearly 300 firefighters and more on the way trying to hold it back. But, tonight they are against the wind. It's been very hot and the winds have been slightly erratic so that's going to be the toughest challenge that we have. Reporter: The fire started burning Friday near the town of Wofford heights. About 130 miles northeast of los Angeles. Residents watching the fire grow all weekend. 500 homes now evacuated. Others are getting ready just in case they get that dreaded order to get out. We've talked about what we would grab and actually I've put all of my stuff back in the truck just in case. Reporter: A massive dark smoke cloud can be seen across the kern river valley. The flames have torched about 1800 miles of parched brush. The sky occasionally turning Orange from the plumes of fire retardant being dropped from air tankers. Helicopters like this one are getting more water from a nearby lake, as exhausted firefighters dig in for another long night. The firefighters will, as the sun goes down, and everything calms down, they'll be able to continue to aggressively attack the fire. Reporter: David, you can see in the distance there the smoke from in fire. The problem is it's hot. About 100 degrees. It's windy. It's very dry. The good news is, firefighters have 10% containment on this fire. And no homes have burned.
