Gerard Piqué Pranks Fans, Says Shakira Gave Birth
Gerard Piqué announces birth of his son on Twitter, but is it a prank?
Dec. 28, 2012— -- Shakira's boyfriend Gerard Piqué took to Twitter last night to make a very important announcement, which, translated into English, reads: "Our son is already born! We are very happy! Thank you all for your messages!"
But being that December 28 is Día de los Santos Inocentes (the equivalent of April Fool's Day) in Spain and the rest of the Spanish-speaking world, we had our doubts that this is in fact true.
Update: And it turns out our suspicions were correct! About 10 hours after Tweeting the "birth announcement," Piqué followed up with another Tweet, also in Spanish, sharing that the new baby's name is "Innocence" before wishing his online fans a "Happy Day of the Innocents!"
Shakira, 35, announced that she was pregnant with her first child back in mid-September, and recent reports have her giving birth in mid-January.
Shakira's reps did not return our requests for a confirmation last night.
Given Shakira's penchant for sharing things related to her pregnancy on social media, it was odd that she hadn't announced anything yet. Her latest tweet is from December 24, with a link to a video from UEFA, Union of European Football Associations, in which Piqué is honored for being a longtime member of the FC Barcelona family. Piqué was made a socio of the legendary soccer club not long after his birth date of February 2, 1987 – and the proud parents-to-be have said they plan to do the same with the future Shakirito.
"I believe love changes you," Piqué told the UEFA. "It's a very important part of your life. And when you have it, you see things in a different way than you might have done before. When you're single, you concentrate very much on football and your friends. Now it's about your partner, and there's a baby coming too; so things change and you have to adapt. But I think everything that's happening to me now is beautiful."
In the meantime, until their baby does arrive, marvel at the ultrasound photo, which Piqué shared on his WhoSay account on Dec. 6.
