— -- Surprisingly strong earnings reports from Intel Corp. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. are sending stocks sharply higher. The Dow Jones industrial average soared past 10,000 at midday Wednesday, a level not seen in a year. It retreated below that mark shortly afterward.

Major indexes are up more than 1 percent. JPMorgan Chase has handily beat Wall Street's expectations, reporting a profit of $3.59 billion for the July-September period.

Intel also beat analysts' estimates, reporting a smaller-than-expected decline in profit and sales after the market closed Tuesday.

Gains in commodities are also helping to boost the market as the dollar falls.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index is up 13 at 1,086, and the Nasdaq composite index is up 25 at 2,164.
