Retail sales bombed in October

— -- Major retailers reported the sharpest declines in October sales in about four decades Thursday, raising questions about whether the holiday shopping season will be even bleaker than the already dire predictions.

"Clearly, the message is: Consumers are trading down," agrees Patricia Walker, a partner in Accenture's retail practice. "What consumers are spending money on is necessities at low prices."
