— -- Mindy Kaling opened up a few weeks ago to Howard Stern about her split from her now-best friend B.J. Novak.

Her description of what happened was accurate, Novak said.

"It sounded to me [to be] an honest and heartfelt account of a complicated and mostly wonderful relationship," Novak said during an appearance on "Watch What Happens Live." "The highlight of that experience for me was my mom calling to sort of pry, like, 'So, what do you think of what Howard was saying? Sounded pretty interesting to me.' Like Howard Stern would somehow end up as part of my mom's sort of gentle harangue as, 'When are you gonna get your life together?'"

Kaling and Novak, both 35, dated more than a decade ago, and the "Mindy Project" star admitted that at that time, had he asked her to marry him, she would have said yes. During her interview with Stern, she gave a glimpse into their sex life, and said that their breakup left her devastated. Novak's mother found the entire conversation enlightening.

"I suppose she did [learn new things]," Novak said. "It's a little awkward!"
