March 26, 2014 -- "Good Wife" fans were shocked when Josh Charles' character, Will Gardner, died in the show's most recent episode.

But his co-star, Julianna Margulies, revealed that had it not been for her intervention, he would have departed the show well before that.

"Josh was going to leave at the end of last season, and I was so sad about it, I begged him to stay," she wrote in a Facebook chat with fans. "And then [I] asked the writers if they would be open to writing for him for 15 episodes, and somehow everyone agreed!"

What Josh Charles Said About 'Good Wife' Shocker

Charles, 42, recently told David Letterman that he "was just ready to kind of move on" after five years.

"It's been one of the greatest gigs for me in my entire career," he added.

For Margulies, 47, saying goodbye to Charles was especially difficult, given their off-camera friendship.

"Every single day I will miss him," she said. "He is my friend and I love working with him."

As for her character, Margulies explained that she's not sure that Alicia Florrick was ever meant to be with Gardener because of their mutual "baggage." And while coping with Will's death will undoubtedly be difficult for Alicia, Margulies is confident that she'll be OK in the end.

"The show will miss Will's character," she said, "but if you hang in there, I think people will ultimately be happy."
