Pitt, Aniston Wed in Malibu

July 30, 2000 -- Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston tied the knot Saturday in a lavish sunset cermony that reportedly cost $1 million.

About 200 guests attended the nuptials at an a Southern California bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The ceremony was at an estate owned by television executive Marcy Carsey.

Lots of Friends Attended

Guests seen going into the Malibu estate included actress Cameron Diaz and Aniston’s Friends co-stars, including Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow and Courtney Cox-Arquette (with her husband, actor David Arquette).

Ed Norton, who co-starred with Pitt in Fight Club attended with Selma Hayek as his date.

Aniston wore a floor-length white satin silk gown designed by Lawrence Steele, according to a press statement. Her ivory-colored, suede high-heel sandals were designed by shoemaker Manolo Blahnik for Steele. The bridesmaids wore pale green silk chiffon slip dresses with pale tafetta mules.

Pitt wore a black tuxedo designed by Hedi Slimane. His attendants wore black tuxedos designed by Prada.

The celebration continued into the night as heart-shaped fireworks were set off over the Pacific.

Helicopters buzzed overhead for days before the event as a large white tent mushroomed at the location to ensure privacy. But airspace was restricted over the site during the actual ceremony for Pitt, 36, and Aniston, 31.

The event cost $1 million, according to widespread media reports, including $100,000 for security, $75,000 for flowers and $20,000 for fireworks. A publicist did not immediately confirm those reports.

Carsey’s home sits next to another that recently sold for $27 million, KABC-TV in Los Angeles reports.

Apparent voyeurs approached the site by ship, but those travelling by car had a tough time getting a look at the event. “No parking” signs are posted near the site, and the Los Angeles County sheriff has been asked to provide traffic and air space control at the location. ABCNEWS Radio adds that the guests were asked to sign confidentiality agreements.

Wedding Confirmed After Denials

Rumors of the wedding have been swirling for months as Pitt, 36, and Aniston, 31, denied an engagement. But with wedding preparations so visible, their publicist confirmed Thursday that a wedding was scheduled for this weekend but would not give a time.

The wedding of the movie star and Friends actress is the first for both.

Pitt first caught the eye of ladies across America when he played the hitchhiker picked up by Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon in the 1991 film, Thelma and Louise. He went on to appear in several other films, including Legends of the Fall, 12 Monkeys, Seven, and the recent Fight Club.

The actor was last engaged to Gwyneth Paltrow, in a much photographed romance, but the two never married. He also previously dated actresses Robyn Givens and Juliette Lewis.

Even rocker Melissa Ethredige wanted a shot at the actor, who once provided a memorable Brad Pitt testimonial: “One night a few of us, shall we say, lesbians, were in the hot tub watching the guys play basketball in the pool. We were staring at Brad and we all agreed he could change a woman’s mind.”

Aniston is the one who managed to change Pitt’s mind about his bachelor days in what is, for now, the most publicized wedding of the year.

Friends debuted in 1994, and soon made Aniston a household name. She is the final actress on the series to marry, Courtney Cox had the last high profile wedding when she married actor David Arquette.
