Kanye West Sings for Hurricane Relief
Sept. 2, 2005 — -- Kanye West performed at Lincoln Center this morning as part of "Good Morning America's" Songs for Hurricane Relief Series, which is raising funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Proceeds from West's performance will benefit the American Red Cross.
West, who garnered a whopping 10 Grammy nominations this year, was featured recently on the Aug. 21, 2005, cover of Time magazine.
"All of the people I looked up to looked back and said, 'man you must have made it to be on the cover of Time magazine,'" he said.
West opened the concert with "Diamonds from Sierra Leone," from his recently released album "Late Registration."
"It has a lot of energy and usually gets the crowd really hyped, so I wanted to start with that," he said.
Next, he sang "Gold Digger."
While West entertained fans, two important Red Cross phone numbers flashed on the bottom of the screen on "GMA": 1-800-HELP-NOW (1-800-435-7669) for donations to the Red Cross, and 1-866-GET-INFO (1-866-438-4636) to contact the Red Cross about a missing friend or family member.
