Cheryl Burke says sobriety is 'not easy right now' amid Matthew Lawrence divorce
Burke celebrated being four years sober in August.
Cheryl Burke is opening up about her recent divorce from Matthew Lawrence has affected her sobriety.
The "Dancing with the Stars" pro, who previously opened up about quitting drinking in 2018, said on Wednesday's episode of "Red Table Talk" that staying sober amid her and Lawrence's relationship ending has taken a toll on her.
"It's not easy right now, especially during this divorce," she said. "It's waving at me."
Burke, 38, and the "Boy Meets World" alum, 42, got engaged in May 2018 and married in May 2019. Burke filed for divorce earlier this year and it was finalized in September.
"I didn't want this," the two-time Mirrorball champion said, noting that her parents got divorced when she was little and she is "not proud" of her marriage ending.
"That wasn't the plan going in, for sure," she said. "But then there's also a point where I need to put myself first and my sobriety first."
These days, Burke said she is focusing on looking inward and is "choosing not to date" others and is, instead, deciding to "date myself" for now.
"Easier said than done because, you know, there's a difference of being alone versus lonely, and I'm just trying to adjust and take the time because I owe it to myself," she said. "One day at a time. One minute at a time."
