Actress Alexis Floyd is joining the cast of "Grey's Anatomy" for season 19.

Floyd, who recently appeared in shows like "Inventing Anna and "The Bold Type," will play a new character named Simone Griffin, according to ABC.

Griffin, a new first-year surgical resident, is described as a "funny, whip smart, high achiever with a complicated family dynamic." Additionally, Griffin "grew up in Seattle, but never wanted to work at Grey Sloan because of a painful personal history with the hospital."

"'Grey's Anatomy,' like all of Shonda's canon, is a genre re-defining show that remains masterfully committed to diversity, relevancy and vulnerability," Floyd said in a statement. "Joining the cast in its 19th season is an immeasurable honor, and quite simply, it's gonna be wicked fun."

Information about Floyd's role seems to indicate it won't be long before Grey Sloan Memorial's resident program is back up and running, following the events which led to it being shut down in the season 18 finale.

This plot point led to the resignation of Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), resulting in Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) agreeing to step in as interim chief of surgery.

Fans will see how their favorite TV doctors pick up the pieces when "Grey's Anatomy" season 19 premieres Oct. 6 on ABC.
