Gymnast Shawn Johnson welcomes a baby girl 2 years after miscarriage
This is the first child for Johnson and her husband, Andrew East.
The long wait is over: gymnast Shawn Johnson's baby is here.
The former Olympic gold medalist and her husband, former professional football player Andrew East, have welcomed a daughter, they announced on Instagram.
The couple did not share the baby's name or her birthdate.
"You are our everything. Welcome to the world baby girl," Johnson wrote alongside a photo of her family.
Johnson, 27, and East, 28, wed in 2016. The next year, Johnson was shocked to learn that she was expecting, but the pregnancy ended in miscarriage.
Miscarriage, especially in the first trimester, is common. According to the Mayo Clinic, at least 10% to 20% of known pregnancies end in loss.
In an interview with "Good Morning America" earlier this year, Johnson said that sharing their experience with pregnancy loss had been cathartic, and that she and her husband were "dreaming of the day when we can hold our baby for the first time."
"It's going to be probably the most terrifying moment of our lives too, like, what do we do know with this thing!" she added with a laugh. "But holding our baby -- I'm really excited for that."
