In an emotional acceptance speech for best international feature film at the 93rd Academy Awards, “Another Round” director Thomas Vinterberg paid tribute to his late daughter.

“Another Round” is a comedic drama starring Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang and Lars Ranthe. They play four friends who decide to test out a hypothesis that maintaining a specific blood alcohol content level will improve their lives.

Vinterberg said he wanted to make a film that “celebrates life.”

However, just four days into shooting the film in 2019, his daughter Ida died in a car accident.

“We miss her, and I love her,” Vinterberg said Sunday while wiping away tears.

Two months before filming began, Ida was in Africa and sent her father a letter praising the film.

“She had just read the script and she was glowing with excitement. She loved this and she felt seen by this. And she was supposed to be in this,” Vinterberg said. “And if anyone dares to believe that she's here with us somehow, you'll be able to see her clapping and cheering with us. We ended up making this movie for her, as her monument.”

Vinterberg closed out his speech by speaking directly to his daughter, dedicating the win to her.

“So Ida, this is a miracle that just happened, and you’re a part of this miracle. Maybe you’ve been pulling some strings somewhere, I don’t know. But this one is for you. Thank you very much,” he said.
