"American Idol" has officially wrapped its 21st season, crowning Iam Tongi, an 18-year-old from Hawaii, as the latest winner on Sunday night.

"That moment, I was trying to prepare myself for whatever happens, right? So you can see me, if you watch, you can see me just looking down," Tongi recalled of the moment he was announced as this season's American Idol during an interview Tuesday on "Good Morning America."

He said it was a "crazy" moment performing "Monsters" with James Blunt during the finale.

Tongi had a viral "American Idol" audition with the song -- which served as a tribute to his father Rodney, who had died just a few months before the show -- and the duet with Blunt was just as emotional.

Tongi and runner-up Megan Danielle share what it was like appearing on the 21st season of the singing competition.

Each season, contestants from across the U.S. compete to achieve music superstardom. They audition for -- and are later critiqued and guided by -- judges, including country singer Luke Bryan, pop star Katy Perry and music legend Lionel Richie. One person is left standing in the end, making them the next American Idol.

"American Idol" premiered on Fox in 2002 and ran for 15 seasons before ending in 2016. The singing competition show then returned to primetime on ABC in 2018 and has now concluded its 21st season overall, its sixth season since being revived.

Previous winners, such as Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia Barrino and Carrie Underwood, have gone on to snag Grammys and build massive careers, establishing an impressive legacy for the show.

Some contestants who didn't win have also gone on to have equally -- if not more impressive -- careers and achievements. Just look at EGOT winner Jennifer Hudson, for example, who came in seventh place her season.
