Oct. 19 -- With Halloween approaching, GMAs gardening contributor Rebecca Kolls uses Scarecrows to frighten unwelcome ghouls. She makes them all by using things left in her garden after a busy summer.

American Gothic

Her first scarecrows have the American Gothic theme. The two figures are made from old shovels. The shovels are turned so that the back of the blade becomes the head and the stick is the body. Rebecca also recycled some ornamental grass for their hair. The womans body is filled out with chicken wire stuffed with autumn mums to give her a calico print. The man is wearing overalls stuffed with leaves and straw.

Macbeth

The second scene is from act one of Shakespeares Macbeth. Rebecca used a big black planter that once housed one of her ornamental trees to serve as the witches brew pot. The three witches faces are ornamental gourds with bumps and crags. Rebecca used weeds for their hair. Their capes are made from black landscape fabric.

Headless Horseman

The third scene is Washington Irvings Headless Horseman. Shes created a huge figure wrapped in chicken wire and straw. Shes given him a green cape. His hands are made from garden forks. His head is, of course, a pumpkin. However the face is carved on top, so that the pumpkins stem is its nose.

Rebecca says its important to make Ichabod Crane too. She uses a wrought iron plant hanger for the body, an overturned basket for his top hat, and a sunflower ornament for his face. His hands are stuffed garden gloves.
