Gucci makes political statement on abortion in latest cruise collection

As the debate surrounding abortion rights escalates in the United States, Gucci is joining the conversation with their latest 2020 cruise collection.

On Tuesday at Rome's Capitoline Museum, a few of the garments featured in the show include symbolic imagery and verbiage reflecting women's rights and reproductive freedom.

One model walked the runway wearing an embellished black hat, and a textrued blue blazer that read "My Body My Choice" on the back.

In an Instagram post, the brand wrote, "This piece echoes the Creative Director's continuing vision of freedom, equality and self-expression."

Another look included a top that has the date "22.5.78' which refers to the date abortion was made legal in Italy.

After the show, Gucci's creative director, Alessandro Michele, told a group of reporters "Sometimes in life choices are difficult, but I believe that it is the most difficult decision for a woman," according to The Associated Press.

"I respect that decision. I respect that decision as I respect the idea that the uterus is a garden," Michele added.

Gucci also posted a close-up shot of a pleated gown that included an embroidered uterus-like design on Instagram.

Other pieces in the cruise collection gave glitzy nods to trendy looks of the 1970s with Gucci's traditional eclectic aesthetics intertwined throughout.

Speaking further to the strides being made to support abortion rights, the brand wrote in a statement: "Since founding Chime For Change in 2013 — the global campaign that represents and advocates for gender equality — Gucci has a longstanding commitment to women and girls by funding projects around the world to support sexual and reproductive rights, maternal health, and the freedom of individual choice."
