Serena Williams matches with daughter in custom figure skating-inspired Nike dress at US Open
Williams has never strayed from making bold statements with her on-court style.
The spotlight was on Serena Williams, who stepped out on the court in sparkles Monday night in her final U.S. Open appearance before retirement.
Williams, 40, wore a black diamond-encrusted Nike dress -- made of six layers to represent the tennis superstar's six championship wins at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, New York, according to a press release from Nike. Williams later said in a post-match interview that four of the layers were removed because the dress was "too heavy."
To match, Williams wore NikeCourt Flare 2 shoes that included a diamond-encrusted Swoosh and a solid gold shoelace tag that featured 400 hand-set diamonds created in collaboration with Serena Williams Jewelry, according to the release.
In the stands, William's 4-year-old daughter, Olympia, wore a matching outfit to cheer her mom on. Olympia's hair was styled in braids and beads, similar to the same hairstyle her mother wore when she won her first U.S. Open title in 1999.
Earlier this month, Williams announced her retirement in a personal essay featured in Vogue. As a result, the 2022 U.S. Open is expected to be Williams' last time stepping onto the court as a pro.
In her nearly three-decades-long career, Williams has won 23 major single titles -- the most in the Open era for men or women.
Williams won her first-round match in the singles tournament Monday night against Montenegrin player Danka Kovinic. She will face WTA No. 2 ranked player Anett Kontaveit on Wednesday.
She will also compete with her sister Venus Williams in the women's doubles tournament -- a doubles title she's won twice with her sister. The women's doubles tournament opens on Aug. 31, and the Williams sisters are set to play Czech players Linda Noskova and Lucie Hradecka in the first round.
Although her play speaks for itself, Williams has never strayed from making bold statements with her on-court style.
