L O S A N G E L E S, Aug. 2, 2001 -- Steamy sex scenes between Angelina Jolie and her Original Sin co-star Antonio Banderas had the Hollywood rumor-mill spinning for weeks.
The actress told ABCNEWS' Good Morning America that rumors of an off-screen romance are painful.
"You're talking about a man who is deeply in love with his wife [actress Melanie Griffith], and married, he has beautiful children with her, and they're such a great family. And I'm madly in love my husband [actor Billy Bob Thornton], we have such a great relationship, and the idea that either one of us would, would want anything more than our marriages is really insulting and angering."
The noir thriller Original Sin, has received a lot of attention over the sex scenes. Jolie says the press has picked up on that part of the film because so many other parts need to be kept under the covers.
It's Passion, Not Just Sex
"You know, they'd pick up on that, and a lot of the other things they can't talk about because it's a thriller and there are secrets, and so you can't talk about the other things," Jolie said. "And so the obvious aspects of it is that it's a very passionate film. I didn't want to do a sexy movie — that wasn't what I was out to do. I wanted to do a film about characters, and explore why different things come out in different ways in our life."
The film opens with a shot of Jolie's large rosy lips. They move with her opening lines "You cannot walk away from love." Jolie said she can relate to that opening line in her own life.
"I'm deeply, deeply in love with my husband and I don't even know how I would live without him," Jolie said. "So I can't imagine, not only cannot walk away from it, but I don't see how, anything exists without it. How you could exist at all without sharing your life with somebody, or without feeling loved, or without that other person."
During the filming of Original Sin there were rumors that Banderas' wife, actress Melanie Griffith was jealous over the love scenes between Jolie and her husband.
Jolie said she is friendly with Banderas' wife and that Griffith often came by the set. "She was the one that read it and insisted he do the film, because she thought it was such a great character and a great story for him," Jolie said. "So she was actually the one who's more rooting for it than anybody."
Banderas has echoed Jolie's sentiments when it comes to the rumors, saying they are both very much in love with their spouses.
Jolie said the questions famous couples endure from the press are unfair. She said if they were posed to other non-famous couples it would be unacceptable.
"It would just be not a question you ask, or not something you think," Jolie said. "But in this business, it's just another question. It's not that bizarre for some reason, it's funny."
There were reports that when rumors about Banderas and Jolie first surfaced that Jolie said she'd rather sleep with Melanie first.
Jolie told ABCNEWS that she didn't say it that way. "I said that … I was being playful, it was my way of saying that he's married to a beautiful woman and I'd sooner sleep with her than have an affair with him."
