— -- Question: What Treatments Should I Consider For Erectile Dysfunction And Are They Compatible With Diabetes Treatments?

Answer: Yes, there is treatment nowadays. We are very fortunate that we can treat erectile dysfunction. So, the most important thing is to recognize erectile dysfunction and then a careful history needs to be taken. The patient needs to bring all the medications because many of the medications taken for hypertension, for instance, can cause erectile dysfunction. We have to see if the patient is taking antidepressants that can cause erectile dysfunction. Smoking is a very important contributor to erectile dysfunction.

So once we clear that out and we know that erectile dysfunction is indeed caused by diabetes, we can give medications that are not inconsistent with the medications that the patient is taking. Medications such as Cialis, Levitra or Viagra are very effective. About 50 percent of patients with erectile dysfunction in diabetes will improve both their erectile function and they will be able to have satisfactory sexual intercourse with their partner. So we do have those medications and if they don't work I would recommend to consult with a urologist because there are other alternatives that the urologist can address if these medications don't work.
