What Are The Most Important Things To Note When Looking At Food Labels?
Dr. Clark answers the question: 'What Should I Look for on Food Labels?'
February 1, 2009 -- Question: What are the most important things to note when looking at food labels?
Answer: There are two things you want to note on food labels. One is how many >calories per serving. And the second is how many servings in the portions. Sometimes it'll seem like they're only 50 or 100 calories in a serving, but a small can of vegetables might have two or three or four servings so that when you eat that whole can, which is what you usually do, you're actually getting quite a bit more. Secondly, if you have special nutritional needs, for instance if you have diabetes or abnormal lipids, you want to look at the content of the food and make sure that it's not inappropriate for the disease that you have.
