— -- Billowing black smoke and flames could be seen from a distance after two large tanks holding oil caught fire on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast.

Puma Energy confirmed the fires, which started with a single tank Wednesday before spreading to a second tank Thursday.

The energy company said that no injuries or damage had occurred beyond the facility’s perimeter had resulted from the fires. The cause of the fires, the company said, was not immediately clear.

As of this morning, the fire was still burning, according to an EFE news agency report published by Fox News Latino, and people were being evacuated from the surrounding area.

Firefighters, the country’s army and police are responding to the incident, the report said.
