— -- After more than 55 years of conflict, which prematurely ended 220,000 lives, Colombia appears to be on the precipice of peace.

Following nearly four years of intense negotiations, Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos and leaders from the Marxist rebel group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have reached a final agreement to end the five-decade conflict.

In June, the two sides signed a historic cease-fire, which made today’s deal possible.

But it's not over just yet. The deal must now be approved by the Colombian public in a plebiscite, which has not yet been scheduled.

According to The AP, polls suggest that most Colombians have deep antipathy towards FARC rebels and strongly associate them with the narcotic trade that has plagued the country.

Many will likely take issue with the idea of FARC leaders taking positions in Congress that will be reserved for the political movement that the armed group is expected to become, according to the news agency.

Their subordinates will have to reintegrate into modern Colombian society.
