— -- The new school year brings new books, new classmates, new teachers and the chance to stand out from the crowd in new fashion trends.

Celebrity stylist June Ambrose says there are three must-have clothing items for kids heading back to school: a bold pair of jeans, a varsity jacket and track sneakers.

"I think the track sneaker becomes kind of like the second foot," Ambrose said today on "Good Morning America." "It feel like you can wear it with any and everything nowadays."

Ambrose appeared on "GMA" with fashion students from the Parsons Scholars program and the Fashion Institute of Technology's Precollege Program who were tasked to create the ultimate new outfit for the first day of school on a budget of $75.

Ambrose, author of the book “Effortless Style,” says when it comes to accessories, people are clamoring for stackable bracelets and bold necklaces, as well as knit ski caps for both guys and girls.

If the school has a uniform, a simple outfit like jeans or slacks and a plain shirt can be jazzed up with, “confidence, a cool blazer and killer kicks,” according to Ambrose.

A standard school outfit could also be jazzed up by using a tote to carry books instead of a backpack, another trend, Ambrose says.

The most trendy kids in class this year may have also borrowed something from their parents’ or siblings' closets.

Ambrose says the ‘90s trends of plaid shirts, colorful jeans, combat boots and denim jackets with faux-fur trim are all making a comeback this school season.
