  • Kansas City-based photographer Cate DePrisco has been photographing births since January. "It kind of started itself I'd say by a happy accident," she said. "I posted a photo on Instagram of one of my friends who asked me if I could photograph her [child's] birth. Before I knew it, people were following along and asking about the progress of mom."

  • For each client, DePrisco is on call two weeks before the due date and two weeks after to ensure she doesn't miss a moment. "Whenever they want me, if that's the moment they are getting checked into the hospital, even if it's 12 hours, I'm sitting there," she said. "The most I've been with a family was 54 hours."

  • "A doula friend had told me that it's empowering for woman and is opening the discussion for birth -- how it's really beautiful and it doesn't have to be scary," DePrisco said of her birth photography.
