Teen shocked by surprise airport serenade
“I was thinking how lucky I am to have such a romantic boyfriend.”
— -- When Valeria Johnson landed at San Jose International Airport on April 24, she certainly didn’t expect this surprise.
Her boyfriend Blake Du Bois serenaded her with a rendition of Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.”
“I was very surprised, I had no idea,” Johnson, 17, told ABC News. “I was thinking how lucky I am to have such a romantic boyfriend.”
Du Bois concocted the elaborate plan to ask Johnson to prom, and although his original plans got derailed, it seems the serenade was worth the wait.
“We were supposed to actually do the promposal two weeks earlier when she arrived from a flight from New Orleans but her flight ended up being severely delayed so we performed it at a later time,” Du Bois, 18, recalled. “I was also terribly nervous the entire time we waited in the airport. When she arrived, my brain switched into a mode of complete adrenaline. I didn't care how the performance went or if anything were to go wrong because all I cared about was seeing her smile and making her as happy as I possibly could.”
It was quite the romantic “welcome home” gesture in baggage claim.
“They go to different schools,” Johnson’s mom, Sandra Torchia, explained. “For him to be able to pull his friends through the airport -- which is on the other end of the Bay Area -- at 10:30 p.m. on a weeknight, you know he’s a good kid.”
The teens had a lovely time at the prom together on April 28.
“It was amazing,” said Johnson.
