Missing Teenage Skier Found Alive in Maine

March 5, 2013 —March 5, 2013 -- A missing teenage skier was found alive this morning after he disappeared from Sugarloaf Ski Resort in Maine this weekend.

The Maine Warden Service said 17-year-old Nicholas Joy was reported missing from the state's western resort two days ago after he failed to meet up with his father Sunday afternoon for the drive home. The Warden Service, Sugarloaf ski patrol and others launched a massive search and rescue on skis, snowshoes and snowmobiles.

The teenager, from Medford, Mass., was found alive this morning by Joel Paul, a passing snow mobiler, who was not part of the initial search party.

Officials said they found the boy alive and well on the Caribou Pond Road on the west side of the mountain. He's currently being transported to the hospital for evaluation.

The Maine Warden Service said Joy and his father split up after taking a chair lift to the top of the mountain on Sunday and taking separate trails down. Search coordinator Lt. Kevin Adam said both planned to meet up in the Sugarloaf parking lot for the drive back to Massachusetts.

When the boy didn't show, his father called for help.

According to Adams, two or three groups of skiers have disappeared this year at Sugarloaf. He said when his wardens respond, they usually find missing skiers in out-of-bound areas.
