— -- Louisiana holds its Democratic and Republican primaries on March 5, 2016. 59 delegates are at stake for the Democrats and 46 delegates for the Republicans.

Why the state is significant:

  • Since 2000, Louisiana has been a solidly Republican state in general elections, despite the fact that its biggest population center, New Orleans, has a large number of Democratic voters. In 2012, Mitt Romney beat President Obama by a 17 percentage point margin in the Bayou State.
  • Louisiana has one of the largest populations of Catholic voters of any of the Southern states. Catholics made up 36 percent of the Republican primary electorate in 2012, according to exit polls.
  • Fast facts:

  • Although Louisiana has a substantial number of unaffiliated voters, they will not be able to participate in the state’s closed presidential primaries. Only Democratic or Republican registered voters can do so.
  • Republican presidential nominee John McCain won the state in the 2008 presidential election, marking the first time in 40 years that the state did not pick the eventual White House winner.
