— -- Voters in the state of Maryland are heading to the polls on Election Day 2016.

There are 10 electoral votes at stake in Maryland in the presidential race. Maryland allows early voting, and early voting turnout in the state of Maryland in this election has surpassed 2012.

The Old Line State is considered a “blue state,” voting Republican only twice in the last ten elections. Maryland voters hold a solid record of supporting the general election winner, correctly predicting seven in the last ten presidential contests. In both 2008 and 2012, Barack Obama garnered more than 60 percent of the Maryland vote.

Voters will pick a replacement for the popular Barbara Mikulski, who is retiring after 30 years in the U.S. Senate. U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen, a seven-term Democrat, is running against Kathy Szeliga, minority whip in the state House of Delegates.
