Why the state is significant:

The Great Lake State is a big prize for the Democrats to win. Since Texas on Super Tuesday, the state has the largest number of delegates up for grabs for the Democratic candidates.

For the Republicans, Michigan has the third largest number of delegates at stake since Georgia and Texas on Super Tuesday.

Fast Facts:

In the 2012 Republican primary contest, Romney narrowly beat Sen. Rick Santorum in Michigan, the state he grew up in and where his father was a popular governor. It was a pivotal win for Romney whose campaign was struggling to assert his frontrunner status.

To participate in Michigan’s closed primaries, Michigan voters are not required to be register with a party, but must select a party primary. Each party’s ballot only lists candidates of that party.
