Why the state is significant:

  • Nebraska is a solidly red state, having voted for the Republican presidential candidate in all but one general election since 1936. (The only exception was Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964).
  • In the early part of the 20th century, Nebraska was actually at the center of the progressive movement. One of its leaders, William Jennings Bryan hailed from Lincoln.
  • Fast facts:

  • In 2012, Mitt Romney beat President Obama in the state by a nearly 22 percentage point margin.
  • During the 2016 primary season, Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse, a Republican, called for his party to find a “third candidate – a conservative option, a Constitutionalist” rather than nominate Donald Trump.
