1. Michael Phelps

Olympic Medals: 22, 18 of which are gold
Fast Facts:
• Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time.
• This summer, he will become the first American male swimmer to have competed in five Olympics.
• The swimmer was diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.) at age 7 and was directed to the pool to relieve excess energy.
• Phelps ate 12,000 calories daily during his training for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
• His son, who was born this past May, is named Boomer Robert Phelps after Phelps' swimming coach Robert Bowman.
2. Ryan Lochte

Fast Facts:
• Lochte is the current world record holder for the fastest 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley in Men's Swimming.
• He said he lived on McDonald's during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
• Lochte is the proud owner of two dogs named Carter and Yeezy, named after Lil' Wayne and Kanye West's famous shoes, respectively.
• As a teenager, Lochte was a handful at swimming practices, where he would pull on other teammates' legs, blow bubbles underwater and hide at the other end of the pool, according to his father.

4. Yusra Mardini

Fast Facts:
• Mardini is one of 10 athletes competing for the Olympics' first-ever team made up of refugees.
• She fled Syria in August of last year after her home was destroyed.
• After reaching Turkey, Mardini and 19 other refugees arranged to travel to Greece by boat. After the boat's motor stopped working, Mardini, her sister and two others got off the boat and into the water to give it more buoyancy. They helped push the boat for over three hours until they finally reached Lesbos.
5. Dipa Karmakar

• Karmakar is the first female Indian gymnast to ever qualify for the Olympics.
• She is also the first Indian gymnast, male or female, to qualify for the Olympics in 52 years.
• Karmakar is one of very few female gymnasts in the world who have successfully landed the Produnova vault, which requires two-and-a-half somersaults before landing.
