— -- Former San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Anthony Davis, who abruptly retired in June, will be applying for reinstatement and wants to play in 2016, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The 2010 first-round pick became one of a handful of 49ers to retire last offseason.

Davis joined linebackers Patrick Willis and Chris Borland and defensive lineman Justin Smith in retirement.

Davis, the No. 11 overall pick of the 2010 draft out of Rutgers, had not been attending the Niners' voluntary organized team activities after an injury-wracked 2014 season. He began his NFL career by starting his first 64 games, but shoulder, hamstring, knee and ankle injuries, as well as a concussion, limited him to seven games in 2014.
