Adrian Peterson out for Vikings

— -- MINNEAPOLIS -- Running backs Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart are both inactive for the Vikings' game against the Philadelphia Eagles, meaning Minnesota will try to get its fourth win without both the reigning league MVP and the backup that ran for 89 yards after Peterson sprained his foot last Sunday.

Peterson sprained his right foot in the second quarter last Sunday in Baltimore, and had said all week he planned to play against the Eagles. A source with knowledge of the situation, though, told ESPN.com on Monday that it was unlikely Peterson would play, though the source added Peterson would not need surgery for his injury.

"I was anxious to play,'' Peterson said while standing in the press box before the game. "It was out of my hands.''

Both Peterson and Gerhart did some light work on Friday, and coach Leslie Frazier said afterward that he was impressed with how far Peterson had come. Both players were listed as questionable, but Frazier would not say whether either one had better than a 50-50 chance of playing.

Without Peterson and Gerhart, the Vikings will have to go with running backs Matt Asiata and Joe Banyard -- the same tandem they had in their fourth preseason game this season.

Asiata, the Vikings' third running back, has mostly played on special teams after carrying eight times for 32 yards and a touchdown in the preseason finale. Banyard, who posted more than 100 rushing and receiving yards that night, was signed off the Vikings' practice squad Saturday.

Cornerback Chris Cook, who was questionable with a knee injury, is out for the Vikings, as is cornerback Xavier Rhodes, who sprained his ankle last week in Baltimore.
