Ex-Baylor commit, WR prospect Devin Duvernay chooses Texas
— -- The recruiting journey of Devin Duvernay has come to a conclusion ... again.
Duvernay, the No. 42-ranked prospect in the Class of 2016, committed to Texas over TCU on Wednesday ending one of the most bizarre recruitments after Baylor failed to submit his National Letter of Intent paperwork to the Big 12 offices.
"I going to Texas," said Duvernay. "I just feel like they are coming up, and feel good about Charlie Strong and his staff's plan and they are going to turn this thing around. I feel like Coach Sterlin Gilbert is kind of the missing piece to help out the offense. I feel like he can add me in, and add some speed to the receiving core."
Duvernay, the No. 3-rated wide receiver in the 2016 class made unofficial visits to Texas and TCU the last two weekends before picking the Longhorns. He plans to enroll at Texas for the second summer session July 11.
The nation's fastest recruit in the 2016 class with 10.27 100-meter speed began seeking a release from his NLI after news of the sexual assault scandal that has rocked Baylor and cost coach Art Briles his job May 26 before learning that his NLI was invalid and he was free to be immediately recruited by other schools.
More than 40 schools reached out to Duvernay on June 2 after the news broke that his NLI was invalid with just three left standing in the days following - Texas, TCU and Oklahoma.
The addition of Duvernay adds to the Texas 2016 haul that was ranked No. 10 nationally, and became the story on signing day picking up ESPN300 players Jeffrey McCulloch, Brandon Jones, Jordan Elliott, Chris Daniels, Erick Fowler and Marcel Southall on Feb. 3rd. With the addition of Duvernay, the Texas class now includes 13 members of the 2016 ESPN 300.
Duvernay, an Under Armour All-America Game selection, is expected to compete right away at slot receiver and in the return game.
Seven other recruits from Baylor's class have requested the school release them from their letters of intent. As yet, they have not been released, but have not enrolled.
